Chapter 10

HABITATION OF GOD’S PRESENCE

As God begins to shift His church from a temporal to an eternal mind-set, we will see people sowing their lives into the ground of promise like never before. The body of Christ is awakening to the necessity of having God’s presence upon us everywhere we go, not just in the church house. It can be seen, felt, and heard by all people, even unbelievers. We desire more than visitations in the church, whereby we have “revival” every so often when we grow weak and weary. What do we do when revival comes? Revival is unto a purpose and that purpose is still intended to follow God’s order: ministry to God first, ministry to people second. Salvations, healings, miracles, and all the acts and works of God through His people are most definitely signs of revival. But what I am after is the saved, healed, and delivered to be true living stones, priests before their God and built up into a resting place of God!

I am all for revival. I believe we must always pray for it and contend to live in a place of revival. But what I speak of is deeper. We are not looking for visitation only, but habitation. God is not into one-night stands. He is after a bride. He wants more than visitation rights to His children; He wants to abide with them. In fact, the habitation of God is the ultimate purpose of God for His people.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them.” (Revelation 21:1–3, emphasis mine)

John the Revelator got a sneak peek into our ultimate destiny. I love how the New Living Translation puts this verse:

I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.” (Revelation 21:3)

If a visitation of God’s Spirit can be likened unto revival, then the habitation of His presence would most surely be likened to a global great awakening. While spiritual words can be confusing and too complex for edification at times, describing moves of God’s Spirit is crucial for growth. The purpose of revival is multifaceted, yet it has a singular overall focus. That focus is to build up the resting place of God’s Spirit upon the earth.

Revival winds bring building blocks. These building blocks are people, alive with the love of Jesus and eager to build Him a place on the earth to rest. Ezra knew this when he prayed for revival.
